Grand Hotel expands in McKinney

With the grand opening of an expanded Grand Hotel, historic downtown McKinney now has an additional four stories and 32 rooms of hotel space.
Developer Don Day first opened the luxury hotel in July 2007. He says underestimated demand, and quickly saw a need for more space.
The Grand Hotel features rooms with tin ceilings, granite tile bathrooms and oversize beds. So far this year, the hotel has booked 50 wedding parties and a similar number of corporate retreats.
The McKinney Economic Development Corp. supported the hotel's expansion with $51,000 for infrastructure improvements that has brought new electrical service to the entire west side of the city's historic downtown square.
In addition, the City of McKinney recently completed a $2.2 million in improvements, widening sidewalks and improving streets, making room for six outside restaurant seating areas.
According to the MEDC, downtown restaurants are now serving about 1 million customers each year.
"The downtown district is comprised of 128 unique businesses, and new venues are opening up all the time," Day said. "But balancing historical preservation with new development takes both private and public investment."
